Maestros of Movement Brought Together by 2012 Vilcek Prizes

The Vilcek Foundation is pleased to name the 2012 winners of the Vilcek Prizes, honoring foreign-born scientists and artists in the United States. The Vilcek Prize for the Arts, this year awarded in Dance, is presented to Mikhail Baryshnikov, born in Latvia to Russian parents, for his body of distinguished work and his legacy of advancing the field of dance. The Vilcek Prize for Biomedical Science is awarded to Peruvian-born Dr. Carlos Bustamante, a professor at the University of California, Berkeley, for his discoveries in the fields of molecular biology and biophysics; most notably, for inventing tools to study life-sustaining cellular processes at the level of single molecules.

The 31st Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF), presented by Halekulani, in partnership with The Vilcek Foundation, will present five films in the "American Immigrant Filmmakers On Profile" (AIFP) program. AIFP highlights the creative spirits that enliven and inspire the American cinema, an art form that owes much to the immigrant community in this country.

An artist finds her footing on liminal terrain — Nicole Awai unveils mixed-media installation at the Vilcek Foundation Gallery

Premiering September 17th at the Vilcek Foundation Gallery, in New York City, is Almost Undone, a new installation by mixed-media artist Nicole Awai. Featuring drawings from an earlier series by the Trinidadian native, entitled Specimen from Local Ephemera, the drawings in this new exhibition will serve as visual anchors for emergent pieces that seem to suspend, exude⎯even escape⎯their wall-bound origins, symbolizing the transition of Ms. Awai’s work from one dimension into the next.

Caring and Advocating for Torture Survivors

The Vilcek Foundation, in cooperation with the Bellevue/NYU Program for Survivors of Torture (PSOT), will host a lecture by Dr. Allen Keller, director and founder of the program, on the critical need to provide recovery services to survivors of torture. Presented on Wednesday, January 26, 2011, at the Bohemian National Hall in New York City, Dr. Keller will discuss the comprehensive care PSOT offers to torture victims and their families so that they may regain their health and begin to rebuild their lives.

Toshiko Nishikawa: Senbazuru

At Senbazuru, a new interactive installation by Toshiko Nishikawa, viewers are drawn to gaze at a world within a world.
